Yaşarata: “A government that supports direct flights to North Cyprus is in power”
Muhammet Yaşarata, Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce of the UK, underlined that the general election which took place last week would make a major contribution to the conclusion of the Brexit process.
Following the election results last week, Muhammet Yaşarata made important statements in regards to the UK elections.
Referring to Iain Duncan Smith, who has been cited as the light of hope for Turkish Cypriots living in England for direct flights, Yaşarata emphasized that Smith has portrayed great support for the Turkish Cypriot community.
Yaşarata made the following statement:
“It was vital for the Conservative Party to win a majority during the elections since there is a general Brexit issue in the UK. Hence, after the election, there will be clarity among the pathway of Brexit. The elector’s views on Brexit have been determined with this election and now we will observe the economic position UK will pursue. Considering that the the UK is the fifth-largest economy in the world at present, I strongly believe that the UK economy will maintain its place as a growing economy.”
‘A consistent supporter of the Turkish Cypriot community’
Noting that Iain Duncan Smith has been re-elected as a member of parliament for Chingford & Woodford, the constituency, which has a large Turkish Cypriot population. The MP for Chingford and Woodford and a former leader of the Conservative Party, Iain has made repeated calls for direct flights to North Cyprus and listened to his Turkish Cypriot constituents’ concerns, also acted upon them too.
Within the past few years, Smith has ensured for Turkish Cypriot community members to come together with the Transport Minister Chris Grayling and Boris Johnson, to converse about direct flights to North Cyprus.
Yaşarata outlined that Iain Duncan Smith is of great importance especially for Turkish Cypriots living in the UK, Yaşarata further stated “Iain Ducan Smith has demonstrated significant support for the Turkish Cypriot rights, he also made a proposal to the British Parliament to provide direct flights to Northern Cyprus. For this reason, we closely follow and support Iain Duncan Smith’s work here. We will continue to communicate with all parties for the benefit of the Turkish Cypriot community in the UK.”
Duncan Smith recently expressed great regret that Turkish Cypriots could not fly directly to their homeland. He described the situation as “manifestly unfair” and has been working with his Turkish Cypriots constituents and representatives of the UK community to lobby the British government for a solution.
Yaşarata conveyed that Iain Duncan Smith supported the work of Turkish Cypriots to create direct flights, “We know that the victory of the Conservative Party with a large majority implies that there is a ground in the parliament which will facilitate the travel of Turkish Cypriots. It is also vital that the 300,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the UK and their businesses have a significant contribution to the UK economy with a turnover of over 5 billion pounds. The Conservative Party’s election victory and Duncan Smith’s re-election has resulted in hope for our community.
‘Johnson announced that he will support Turkish Cypriots’
Yaşarata mentioned that Prime Minister Boris Johnson also promised to provide all kinds of support for Turkish Cypriots to travel to their countries easily.
Yaşarata asserted; “Tourism is one of the top channels of income for the Northern Cyprus economy, which makes effective travel and transportation one of the most basic rights of our community. Therefore, we refuse to step back from pursuing all efforts until we see that necessary steps are being taken which will secure direct charter flights from the UK to North Cyprus.”
